Medicare Supplement Plans

Private insurance companies offer plans that fill the gaps in Original Medicare, hence the alternate name, "Medigaps". The gaps in coverage are your share of the costs. Medigap policies pay all or a portion of your deductibles, coinsurance, and copays.

They can only supplement Original Medicare, meaning they can not be used in conjunction with Medicare Advantage, or Employer group plans to pay out-of-pocket expenses.

Members have the flexibility to see any provider that accepts Medicare.

Eligibility

• Must have Part A and Part B
• U.S. Citizen or lawfully present in U.S. before enrollment date.

Cost to member

• Monthly premiums/payments are paid in addition to the Part B premium. 
• Members usually purchase a Prescription Drug Plan (PDP) for an additional premium:    Part B premium +  Supplement premium + PDP premium
• Any remaining costs not paid by Original Medicare and the Medigap plan. Different plans pay different percentages of your cost. For example, a Plan G supplement plan pays all of a member's out-of-pocket costs except for the Part B deductible ($240 in 2024).
